Positive Energy is Directional

Dear friends,

We live in a material world. As such, we see things as fixed forms. While this is of course true, there is quite a bit more going on than what is clear to the eye.

Not so long ago, people thought matter was the basis of reality. Over time scientists came to see that energy underlies matter. If you removed all the space from the swirling atoms of a chair, the chair would become so small you couldn’t even see it. It's the repelling and attracting energy forces that give it shape and cohesion. That which lies beneath what we see is, in a sense, more basic and more real.

Since in fact energy underlies matter, it would make sense for us to pay at least as much attention to energy as matter. But the mind generally relates to what it can easily see and touch.

When dealing with humans, it is energy (and vibration, if you prefer that word) that needs to be primary. Paintings of saints often show them with upturned eyes, pointing towards the spiritual eye located at the point between the eyebrows. Why? Because our gaze goes upwards when we are feeling uplifted. Even our language reflects this: "I had an ‘up' day," "I was uplifted," "The sky's the limit," etc. The negative words are all down: "I felt low," "I was depressed," "I had a down day,” “I was downcast.” And about being sharp and aware of the world around us: I woke “up” but I "fell” asleep.

People feeling good tend to stand straight and tall. A favorite song of mine has a line, "How much reality can people see when they spend all day hanging their heads?” Clearly there is something about up that is better for us than down.

An expansive joy-filled life is tremendously aided by a flow of upward energy. If we can consciously feel the flow of energy in our bodies moving upwards, difficulties seem smaller, our mood improves, and we are better able to face the world with a smile rather than a scowl. Try it right now. Stand up straight, take a few deep breaths, and cast your eyes upwards while doing so. This simple exercise can change your mood in under one minute.

While we cannot always do such an exercise, we can feel such movement throughout our day in our minds. May our consciousness move ever upwards like a flower reaching for the sun.
