Thoughts Are Universally Rooted

Thoughts Are Universally Rooted

Dear friends,

This phrase of Yogananda's is extremely interesting and can help us understand some important spiritual principles.

We tend to think of ourselves as discreet individuals. That is of course true in some ways, but in some other important ways, not so much. We like to think, for example, we have our own ideas. "That was my idea" is a somewhat common phrase. Again, in some ways it may well be true, but at the same time truth cannot be created; it can only be perceived.

Perhaps an image will make this clearer. It's as if we are each a radio receiver. There are an almost infinite number of frequencies broadcasting at any minute. But each of us has the choice to tune our radio to whatever frequency we want. (To be fair, we do not always make the best choices, but that is a topic for another letter.)

Best is to tune our radio to the frequencies we truly desire. Those that uplift us and not just those of habit, temporary attraction, or fear.

The frequencies can be considered ideas. They are waiting to be discovered. Each new insight, in science as one example, makes another truth that has always been there, slightly more accessible. The more open we are, guided by what our heart truly desires rather than a passing fancy, the more likely we are to have an "idea" that furthers our goal.

The more we can remove the static our heart generates by thwarting cross-currents, the better able we are to draw guidance and "new" ideas. We are each fountains of creativity in one way or another. Let us work to relax the heart and open to Spirit in all ways.
