Stop It!
Dear friends,
If you are anywhere near my age, you probably remember Bob Newhart. He was a comedian who often played psychiatrists, and this skit involves him in that profession.
A woman walks into his office and says, "My friend tells me you offer therapy for $5 and that it only takes a few minutes. She says your work is great. I don't see how that can be, but for $5 I'd like to give it a shot." He says "sure" and asks her what her problem is.
She recites a modestly long story rich with details, and concludes with stating that this situation leaves her feeling crummy. He looks right at her, raises his voice, and yells, "Stop it!" She is of course shocked, but sheepishly admits she feels somewhat better. He holds his hand out, palm up, and says, "That'll be $5 please."
She asks if she can share another issue, to which he agrees. Upon finishing, she again hears, "Stop it!" and is once again greeted by an upturned palm.
This is of course an adorable story, but it strikes us because there is a good bit of truth in it. Years ago a counselor and friend of mine heard my tale of woe about something or other. At the end she said, "I'd have more sympathy for you if I thought you were trying." [This is a very cheeky thing to say, but she knows me well.] It actually, upon reflection, really hit home and was just what I needed to hear.
It is often the case that we spend a lot more time wishing things were different, mentally complaining about others, or suffering in silence, than we do actually working to raise our energy and accept Spirit's will for us. It is not easy, and of course cannot always be done, but a little self-reflection might bring us to the point where a well-placed "Stop it!" can work wonders. And you do not even need to charge yourself $5.
Blessings,
