Everything You Know is Wrong

Everything You Know is Wrong

Dear friends,

Now there's an encouraging title, eh? Actually, it rather is when understood...

I recently gave a public talk at SoulSearch in Palo Alto. Afterwards a fellow came up to me and he seemed the perfect Indian pundit. He said, "I have a question for you..." and I knew some interesting challenge was coming.

He said his teacher [Krishnamurti] says there really is no soul, and then went on to explain that it is just a construct, etc. I pointed out to him that everything he believes is just a construct of his own mind. Until one is Self-realized, we interpret what we see through our own minds and not God's mind.

Scientists use models to understand phenomena. The model of the atom is not accurate and has obvious flaws. but if the scientist picks and obsesses over a model's flaws, thus discouraging himself from using it, there are truths he will never grasp which the model would have helped him see and understand. Too, the model allows new insights to come.

Are there 72 astral worlds or 84? Is the number of times the soul reincarnates 3,492,867 times or more than that? What is the next evolutionary step after the goat? Is there really a soul, or is that just a construct to help us picture reality? ...Who cares?

We are here to merge with Spirit, not to perfectly describe reality with our minds. If having a slightly incorrect belief helps me move closer to perfect peace and bliss... great!

He said, "That's a good answer!" and, not getting the kind of debate I think he was hoping for, wandered off.

It is not that we ought not to strive to understand things well. The mind has its uses. But let us never take our eye off the ball. Our goal is intuitive perception of reality that only comes from Spirit. Our intellectual understanding is always flawed, but that is a feature, not a bug.
